Section-5, Checking the prerequisites on the customer provided rack

Procedure

  1. Locate the customer provided rack.
  2. The rack internal depth (EIA front rail to rear rail) must be 720 - 780 mm (28.4" to 30.7").
  3. The rack must have an empty location of EIA 16U (48 rail holes).
    Note: 1U = 3 mounting holes. See Figure 1.

  4. The customer must provide two power connectors for the DS8882F mainline power cables.
Note: It is strongly recommended the customer use two different power sources.
    • If the source power connectors are external to the rack, the mainline power cables are 4.3 meters.
    • If the source power connectors are internal to the rack, the mainline power cables are less than 2 meters.
  5. Is the optional Feature Code 1765 (keyboard/display, 1U tray) listed in ship group?
    • Yes. The rack must have an empty location of EIA 1U (3 rail holes) at an acceptable height. Go to step 7.
    • No. Go to step 6.
  6. The two management consoles require a VGA and USB connection to a keyboard/display function in the rack. The connections can be shared.
Attention: The 983 has one VGA and one USB connection for each management console. There are two management consoles.
    • If the 983 is being installed in an IBM ZR1 server rack (Feature Code 0937) or IBM LR1 servicer rack (Feature Code 0938), the rack already contains a keyboard/display with KVM switch. The KVM switch connections require the VGA/USB to 25 pin serial adapter cable that is provided by Feature Codes 0937/0938. If the adapter cable is not in the ship group, stop and call the next level of support.
    • If the rack does not have an existing keyboard/display function, and the ship group does not list Feature Code 1765, STOP THE INSTALLATION. Work with the customer and next level of support to resolve the problem.
  7. Go to the next section.
