Routing and connecting customer cables to the storage facility
Procedure
- Ask the customer to supply a diagram or output from the DS8000® Storage Manager to define the connectivity between the DS8000 host card ports and system host card ports.
-
Label host cables (Fibre Channel and zHyperLink) coming from
each customer host adapter. Note: To allow correct connection and disconnection of external cables, label cables by using the customer's current cable-identification plan and the labels that are provided by your customer.
- Route the cables to the rear of the appropriate DS8000 rack.
- Open the hook-and-loop fasteners in the tailgate.
-
This step provides information useful for connecting customer host cables to the I/O enclosure
host adapter card ports.
- The customer can reference the host adapter port locations by using the information that is displayed in the DS Storage Manager or DS CLI.
- For an example of DS Storage Manager I/O port information, see Figure 1.
- For an example of DS CLI I/O port information, see Figure 2.
- For an example of DS CLI zHyperLink port information, see Figure 3.
- For information on host adapter card port location codes that are used in serviceable event FRU lists, see Figure 4 and Figure 5.
- For information on zHyperLink port location codes that are used in serviceable event FRU lists, see Figure 5.
- For information on Rack-1 I/O enclosure HA port locations and IOPORT numbers, see Table 1.
- For information on Rack-2 I/O enclosures HA port locations and IOPORT numbers, see Table 2.
- For information on I/O enclosure zHyperLink port locations and HL port numbers, see Table 3.

Route the Fibre Channel cables up or down through the tailgate and route them to the
destination I/O enclosure and host card and plug them in.
Important: The optical cable plugs (LC connectors) and ports (SFPs) must be cleaned before connecting them. Use cleaning tool 54Y4392 or IBM-approved alternative. After cleaning SFPs with the tool, use air bulb 45D2645 or IBM-approved alternative. For detailed procedures, refer to current DS8000 Info Alerts or contact your next level of support.Notes:
- Save the wrap tools removed from each Fibre host card. The wrap tool can be used as a dust cover and also a wrap tool for diagnosis and repair.
- There are two types of Fibre Channel
cards:
- Short wave
- Long wave
- Route the zHyperLink cables (if present) up or down through
the tailgate and route them to the destination I/O enclosure and host card and plug them in. Important: The optical cable plugs (MPO or MTP connectors) and transceiver ports must be cleaned before you connect them. Use cleaning tool 43W3044 or IBM-approved alternative. Cleaning procedures are provided with the tool. After you clean the transceiver ports with the tool, use air bulb 45D2645 or IBM-approved alternative. For detailed procedures, refer to current DS8000 Info Alerts or contact your next level of support.
- Secure the host cables in the tailgate with the included hook-and-loop fasteners.
-
Reinstall the tailgate brackets in all frames by using the screws removed earlier. Tighten all
screws. See Figure 6.
