Exchange the storage enclosure power supply

Before you begin

Attention:
  • This procedure is not a stand-alone procedure. Customer disruption and damage to the hardware might occur when microcode and power boundaries are not in the proper conditions for this service action.
  • If a serviceable event FRU repair directed you to this procedure, the microcode and power boundaries are already set.
  • If a serviceable event FRU repair did not direct you to this procedure, see MAP1230 Replace a FRU without using a serviceable event.
Notes:
  • All the cables and FRUs to be removed must be uniquely identified so they can be reinstalled correctly.
  • If an installed earthquake resistance kit prevents you from accessing this FRU, refer to MAP1600.

Remove the storage enclosure supply

Before you begin

Attention: Power supplies are hot-pluggable FRUs. Ensure that you only remove one power supply at a time.

Procedure

  1. To locate this FRU, take one of the following actions and then return here and continue to replace the FRU:
    • If this FRU has a FRU identify indicator, use the FRU identify indicator, which is listed in MAP1240 Locating FRUs by using identify indicators. If not, use the location code.
Note: There might be cases where the FRU failure or fencing conditions prevent the FRU LED indicator from being lit even if the FRU has power.
    • Use the location code, which is listed in MAP1245 Finding FRUs by using location codes.
    • If there is no FRU identify indicator or location code, you were sent here by an isolation MAP or symbolic FRU procedure. Use the information in that procedure and the figures in this procedure to locate the proper part to exchange.
  2. Most, but not all, FRUs have identify indicators. Use the flashing amber or solid blue FRU identify indicators to ensure that you are working on the correct enclosure or FRU.
  3. At the rear of the rack, observe the partner power supply, which is not being replaced, in this storage enclosure. See Figure 1. The input power good LED Callout label 1 on the partner power supply must be lit before you go to the next step. This ensures that the storage enclosure remains powered while the failing power supply is removed. If the power good LED is not lit, DO NOT CONTINUE. Instead, contact your next level of support.
    • Callout label 1 DC input good
    • Callout label 2 DC output good
    • Callout label 3 Identify/attention
    • Callout label 4 Not used

  4. Observe the storage enclosure power supply that is being replaced.
    • The input power LED Callout label 1 and the output power LED Callout label 2 remain lit even though the HMC screen indicates that the FRU was powered off. This is normal.
    • The power LEDs are off after the input power cord is disconnected in the next step.
  5. If microbays are located behind the affected storage enclosure, move one or both microbays to the service position as needed to allow access to the storage enclosure.
Note: Do not disconnect any microbay cables.
    1. Press the release tabs Callout label 1 toward the center of the microbay. See Figure 2.
    2. Slide the microbay back to the service position. See Figure 2.

  6. At the power supply being replaced, release the power input cable from the retention bracket and disconnect it. See Figure 3.
Note: After the power input cable is disconnected, storage enclosure fans in the other power supply shift from low to high speed.

  1. To maintain proper cooling airflow through the storage enclosure, both power supplies must be physically installed, even if one of them is not functional. When a power supply is removed, it disrupts the airflow. Ensure that you are ready to install the new power supply immediately after you remove the old power supply.
  2. Push the orange release tab to the right, and pull the power supply latch handle out and down. See Figure 4.

  3. Pull the power supply straight out from the storage enclosure.

Install the storage enclosure supply

Procedure

  1. Slide the new power supply into the storage enclosure and push the power supply latch handle up and in until it latches into place.
  2. Connect the input power cord to the power supply.
  3. Secure the input power cord with the retention bracket.
  4. If any microbays are in the service position, return them to the operating position.
    1. Slide the microbay forward to the operating position.
    2. Ensure the release tabs latch into the microbay tray.
  5. Exit this service information center parts exchange procedure and return to the procedure that sent you here.
