MAP1230 Replace a FRU without using a serviceable event
This procedure describes how to replace a FRU when it is not listed as a serviceable event by first selecting a specific FRU by location and then repairing the FRU.
MAP1230 Section-1
Procedure
-
Understand the types of FRUs listed in a serviceable event FRU list. See Table 1.
- If the Class is FRU, the information listed is for a physical FRU that can be selected and then replaced. The location code of the FRU is listed and is automatically used by the repair procedure.
- If the Class is Isolate procedure, it can be selected which then displays the procedure. If
the Location code is listed, it is for reference to use manually as guided by the procedure. After
the likely failing FRU is determined, it is replaced one of two ways.
- If it is listed as a FRU in an open serviceable event, that event is used.
- If it is not listed in an open serviceable event, the procedure in the next steps to manually select FRU by using the location code is used.
- If the Class is Symbolic procedure, it can be selected to display the procedure. If a
location code is listed, it is only reference information for the procedure. In the examples in
Table 1, the location codes are for connector ports on a
FRU. After the likely failing FRU is determined, it is replaced in one of two ways.
- If it is listed as a FRU in an open serviceable event, that event is used.
- If it is not listed in an open serviceable event, the procedure in the next steps to manually select FRU by using the location code is used.

Do you know the FRU to be replaced?
- Yes. Go to step 3.
- No. Exit this procedure and determine the FRU to be replaced.
- Do you have the location code for the FRU to be replaced?
-
The location code of the FRU to be replaced must be determined before going to the next
step.
- Refer to MAP1245 Finding FRUs by using location codes.
- Use any open serviceable events related to the problem.
- Use any visual symptoms or customer reported problems. Refer to the Start here section of the Information Center:
-
There are two parts to the location code:
- Determine the specific location code for this FRU position in the rack by referring to the Location codes > Location codes in serviceable events information in the Service information center.
- Determine the serial number (ssssssss) to include in the location code by physically finding it on a label for the enclosure or rack that contains the FRU being replaced.
- Use the Exchange FRU option to replace the FRU.
- From the navigation area, click Storage Facility Management > storage facility.
- From the bottom Task area, click Exchange Parts. Select the exchange option that contains the FRU to be exchanged. A window opens and displays the enclosures.
- Select the Enclosure location code, and click Show FRUs.
- Select the FRU Location Code,
and click Exchange FRU.
Note: For models 98x, when repairing the system memory module, select the location Un-P1-CDIMM which applies to all memory module locations.
