MAP40A0 Update customer Network Time Protocol server settings for the HMC

The customer can request that the primary management console (HMC) periodically update its date and time from an external Network Time Protocol (NTP) server.

Procedure

  1. Which management console are you checking/updating the NTP settings for?
    • Primary HMC (MC1), go to step 2.
    • Secondary HMC (MC2), go to step 5.
    Note: For model 961 or earlier, if the management console is the second console in a "2x2" configuration (that is, contained in a storage facility that was added to an existing storage complex), use the steps for "Secondary HMC (MC2)".
  2. Does the customer want to use an external NTP server?
    • Yes, go to step 3.
    • No, go to step 4.
  3. The customer wants to use an external NTP server to update time on the primary HMC.
    1. From the navigation area, click HMC Management. In the right work pane, go to the Operations section.
    2. Click Change Date and Time.
    3. Click NTP Configuration tab.
    4. Ensure the Enable NTP service on this HMC checkbox has a checkmark (enabled).
    5. Observe the Currently defined time servers in NTP configuration file: table.
    6. Remove any time server information that no longer applies. This includes 172.16.x.x and/or 172.17.x.x, if present. Select the servers and then click Remove NTP Server.
    7. Click Add NTP Server to add NTP servers specified in the customer configuration worksheet. Ensure that the NTP version is correct for each time server.
    8. Click OK then exit this procedure, it is complete.
  4. The customer does not want to use an external NTP server to update time on the primary HMC.
    1. From the navigation area, click HMC Management. In the right work pane, go to the Operations section.
    2. Click Change Date and Time.
    3. Click NTP Configuration tab.
    4. Ensure the Enable NTP service on this HMC checkbox has a checkmark (enabled).
    5. Click OK then exit this procedure, it is complete.
  5. The secondary HMC must not use an external NTP server. It updates time/date from the primary HMC.
    1. From the navigation area, click HMC Management. In the right work pane, go to the Operations section.
    2. Click Change Date and Time.
    3. Click NTP Configuration tab.
    4. Ensure the Enable NTP service on this HMC checkbox has a checkmark (enabled).
    5. Click OK then exit this procedure, it is complete.
