Exchange the I/O enclosure power supply to the power distribution unit (PDU) cable

Attention:
  • This procedure is not a stand-alone procedure. Customer disruption and damage to the hardware might occur when microcode and power boundaries are not in the proper conditions for this service action.
  • If a serviceable event FRU repair directed you to this procedure, the microcode and power boundaries are already set.
  • If a serviceable event FRU repair did not direct you to this procedure, see MAP1230 Replace a FRU without using a serviceable event.
Notes:
  • All the cables and FRUs to be removed must be uniquely identified so they can be reinstalled correctly.
  • If an installed earthquake resistance kit prevents you from accessing this FRU, refer to MAP1600.

Remove the I/O enclosure power supply to the PDU cable

About this task

Note: The I/O enclosure must be fully removed from the rack for this procedure.

Procedure

  1. To locate this FRU, take one of the following actions and then return here and continue to replace the FRU:
    • If this FRU has a FRU identify indicator, use the FRU identify indicator, which is listed in MAP1240 Locating FRUs by using identify indicators. If not, use the location code.
      Note: There might be cases where the FRU failure or fencing conditions prevent the FRU LED indicator from being lit even if the FRU has power.
    • Use the location code, which is listed in MAP1245 Finding FRUs by using location codes.
    • If there is no FRU identify indicator or location code, you were sent here by an isolation MAP or symbolic FRU procedure. Use the information in that procedure and the figures in this procedure to locate the proper part to exchange.
  2. Most, but not all, FRUs have identify indicators. Use the flashing amber or solid blue FRU identify indicators to ensure that you are working on the correct enclosure or FRU.
  3. At the front of the rack, unplug the power input cable Callout label 1 to both power supplies in the I/O enclosure. See Figure 1.

  4. Remove both power supplies.
    1. Remove the I/O power supply retention bracket Callout label 1 by removing the screws on either side of the bracket Callout label 2. See Figure 2.

    2. Push down on the red release button Callout label 1 beneath the input power connector. See Figure 3.

    3. Pull the power supply straight out from the I/O enclosure.
  5. Remove both fan assemblies. See Figure 4.
    1. Unlatch the fan release lever Callout label 1 in the upper right corner of the fan. Then, use it to pull the fan assembly straight out from the I/O enclosure.

  6. At the rear of the rack, unplug all the cables (PCIe Callout label 1, SPCN Callout label 2, FC-AL Callout label 3, and customer host Callout label 4). Ensure that the cables are labeled so they can be properly replugged. See Figure 5.

  7. To disconnect the cable at the left side of the PDU, release the cable connector retainer. See Figure 6.

  8. Remove the I/O enclosure chassis from the rack. See Figure 7.
    1. At the rear of the rack, remove the two hold-down screws Callout label 1.
    2. Push the I/O enclosure forward towards the front of the rack Callout label 2.
    3. At the front of the rack, pull the I/O enclosure out the front being careful to balance it when it is free of the rack.
    4. Place the I/O enclosure on a static-free surface.

  9. Remove the failing power cable.

Install the I/O enclosure power supply to the PDU cable

Procedure

  1. Install the new power cable alongside the I/O enclosure.
  2. Slide the I/O enclosure back into the rack and install the two hold down screws.
  3. At the rear of the rack, connect all the cables to the I/O enclosure.
  4. At the front of the rack install the two power supplies. Ensure that the red latch beneath the input power connector is secure.
  5. Reinstall the I/O power supply retention bracket.
  6. Install and latch the two fans.
  7. Connect the two black power cables to the power supplies.
  8. Route and connect the power cables to the PDU.
  9. At the bus bars, slide the blue retention bracket back in position.
  10. Reinstall the cable retention hardware.
