Exchange the PPS 5/12V DDM power module

  • This procedure is not a stand-alone procedure. Customer disruption and damage to the hardware might occur when microcode and power boundaries are not in the proper conditions for this service action.
  • If a serviceable event FRU repair directed you to this procedure, the microcode and power boundaries are already set.
  • If a serviceable event FRU repair did not direct you to this procedure, see MAP1230 Replace a FRU without using a serviceable event.
Notes:
  • All the cables and FRUs to be removed must be uniquely identified so they can be reinstalled correctly.
  • If an installed earthquake resistance kit prevents you from accessing this FRU, refer to MAP1600.

Remove the 5/12V DDM power module

Procedure

  1. If this rack is a machine type 2107 (not 242x), then see MAP2512 to ensure the 5/12V DDM power module's heavy black power cables are properly crimped into the cable connectors before continuing.
  2. To locate this FRU, take one of the following actions and then return here and continue to replace the FRU:
    • If this FRU has a FRU identify indicator, use the FRU identify indicator, which is listed in MAP1240 Locating FRUs by using identify indicators. If not, use the location code.
      Note: There might be cases where the FRU failure or fencing conditions prevent the FRU LED indicator from being lit even if the FRU has power.
    • Use the location code, which is listed in MAP1245 Finding FRUs by using location codes.
    • If there is no FRU identify indicator or location code, you were sent here by an isolation MAP or symbolic FRU procedure. Use the information in that procedure and the figures in this procedure to locate the proper part to exchange.
  3. Most, but not all, FRUs have identify indicators. Use the flashing amber or solid blue FRU identify indicators to ensure that you are working on the correct enclosure or FRU.
  4. Do not use the PPS FAULT LED indicator Callout label 6 to identify the PPS being repaired.
    • When the failing PPS is being repaired, the PPS FAULT LED indicator on the working PPS in the same rack might be on solid.
      The working PPS is indicating that the PPS being repaired is not available for use.
    • Use the FRU Identify LED indicator Callout label 1 to identify the PPS being repaired.

  5. If this is an expansion rack and it has old level sheet metal, the sheet metal baffle Callout label 2 to the left of the gate and at the bottom of the storage enclosure chassis might need to be removed to allow the gate to swing open. Remove the two screws Callout label 2 that fasten the baffle to the 19" rack mount vertical rails. If the baffle is the new level sheet metal, it has a flexible plastic cutout that bends out of the way when the gate is swung open.

  6. Open the 208VDC bus bar gate Callout label 2 to the service position by removing the two screws Callout label 1 and swinging it open to the left. See Figure 3.

  7. Have the customer remove power to the PPS being replaced.
    1. Instruct the customer to switch off the circuit breaker that supplies mainline ac voltage to the power receptacle for the mainline power cable you are replacing.
      Attention: Use lockout and tagout procedures as defined in the Electrical Safety for IBM® Customer Engineers.
    2. Observe the front of the PPS. Is the AC INPUT GOOD LED indicator off?
      • Yes, the customer has removed power from the correct PPS. Continue with the next step.
      • No, stop. The customer has not removed power from the correct PPS.
        1. Determine which PPS the customer has removed power from.
        2. Have the customer restore power to the PPS. The PPS may not power back on fully.
        3. Observe the LED indicators on the front of both PPSs with a PPS that is fully powered on. If the PPS did not power-on fully, you need to do a pseudo repair of the PPS to power it on. A pseudo repair of the PPS means that you use the normal FRU replacement procedures, but you do not replace or even disconnect the PPS cables. Refer to MAP1230 Replace a FRU without using a serviceable event.
        4. After the PPS is powered back on, return to this step and have the customer switch off the circuit breaker to the proper PPS.
  8. Remove power and mainline power cord from the PPS.
    1. On the PPS, at the ac input power module, set the CB00 switch Callout label 1 to Off (down).
    2. Disconnect the mainline power cord from the ac input power module. Push the two release levers Callout label 2.

  9. At the rear of the PPS that does not contain the module that is being replaced, disconnect the Callout label J3 PPS-to-PPS communication cable at the bottom right of the PPS sequencer module (see Figure 5).
    Notes:
    1. Disconnecting the cable from the PPS that does not contain the module that is being replaced will protect that PPS. Then, when the other end of the cable is disconnected from the PPS containing the module that is being replaced, no pins inside that connector will be able to touch ground and shut down the PPS that does not contain the module that is being replaced.
    2. This removes the remaining logic power from the PPS containing the module that is being replaced; all PPS LEDs should now be off.

  10. At the rear of the PPS containing the module that is being replaced, disconnect the J3 PPS-to-PPS communication cable at the bottom right of the PPS sequencer module.
  11. Disconnect the cables from the 5/12V DDM power module.
  12. Remove the 5/12V DDM power module.
    1. Remove the screws Callout label 1 from the 5/12V DDM power module.
    2. Remove any cable routing brackets that are blocking the module. Each bracket is held by two screws that only need to be loosened, not removed.
    3. Remove the 5/12V DDM power module. Use the location code to determine which module location (E1 or E3).PPS location rear

Install the 5/12V DDM power module

Procedure

  1. Install the 5/12V DDM power module
    1. Install the new 5/12V DDM power module. Secure the two silver thumbscrews.
    2. Ensure the enable switches on the 5/12V DDM power module are set to enabled (up).
    3. Reinstall any cable brackets that were removed.
  2. At the rear of the PPS containing the replacement module, connect the Callout label J3 PPS-to-PPS communication cable at the bottom right of the PPS sequencer module.
  3. At the rear of the PPS that does not contain the replacement module, connect the Callout label J3 PPS-to-PPS communication cable at the bottom right of the PPS sequencer module.
    Note: One or more of the PPS LEDs may now be lit on the PPS containing the replacement module.
  4. Connect the cables to the 5/12V DDM power module.
  5. Connect power.
    1. At the PPS, connect the mainline power cord to the ac input power module. Secure it with both release levers Callout label 2.
    2. At the ac input power module, set the CB00 switch to on (up) Callout label 1.

    3. Instruct the customer to switch on the mainline circuit breaker that supplies mainline ac voltage to the power receptacle for the primary power supply you are replacing.
  6. Return the 208VDC bus bar gate to the closed position.
    1. Pivot the 208VDC bus bar gate closed, being careful that both mainline power cables lie in the space between the two 208VDC bus bars.
    2. Install the two screws.
