Before you begin

Attention:
  • This procedure is not a stand-alone procedure. Customer disruption and damage to the hardware might occur when microcode and power boundaries are not in the proper conditions for this service action.
  • If a serviceable event FRU repair directed you to this procedure, the microcode and power boundaries are already set.
  • If a serviceable event FRU repair did not direct you to this procedure, see MAP1230 Replace a FRU without using a serviceable event.
Notes:
  • All the cables and FRUs to be removed must be uniquely identified so they can be reinstalled correctly.
  • If an installed earthquake resistance kit prevents you from accessing this FRU, refer to MAP1600.

Remove the management console main cable bundle

Procedure

  1. This procedure is disruptive to customer access of the management console. The management console must be shut down, if it is not already powered off.
    1. If this storage facility has a second management console, the customer can manage their data on this storage facility.
    2. Ensure that the customer is aware of the above ability to manage data.
    3. The main cable bundle includes power, Ethernet (2 internal network and 1 customer LAN), and USB cables.
    4. The procedure to shut down the management console, replace the cable bundle and then restore management console operation can take 60 - 90 minutes.
  2. Shut down the management console. Refer to MAP6640 Shutting down, restarting, and logging off the management console.
  3. At the rear of the rack, locate the PJA to management console power cable to be replaced. The cable is a Y cable that has three connectors: PJA E41; PJA E42; and management console power input. See Figure 1 and Figure 2. The power cable is part of a cable bundle that passes through either side of the rack to the management console. The entire bundle must be replaced. The bundle contains all cables that connect directly to the management console, except for video (VGA) and keyboard (USB).
  4. Disconnect the power cable from the connectors on PJA E41 and PJA E42. See Figure 1.

Note: The PJA shown in Figure 1 is for models 980, 981, and 982. J6 and J8 are not present on the PJA for models 984, 985, 986, and 988.

  5. At the front of the rack, remove the screw Callout label 4 from the management console tray. See Figure 3. Pull the tray out to access the rear of the management console.
  6. At the rear of the management console, disconnect all the power and communication cables except for video Callout label 5 and keyboard Callout label 7. See Figure 2 and Table 1 or Table 2 for the management console you are repairing.
  7. Remove the cable retention hardware as needed and pull the cable bundle to the rear of the rack.
  8. Disconnect the remaining cables in the bundle and then remove the bundle from the rack.

Install the management console main cable bundle

Procedure

  1. Route the cable bundle through the left or right side of the rack as required, following the method that is used for the bundle you removed.
  2. Connect all ends of the cable bundle at the rear of the rack except the PJA E41 and PJA E42 power connectors.
  3. At the rear of the management console, connect the power and communications cables. See Figure 2 and Table 1 or Table 2 for the management console you are repairing.
  4. Slide the management console tray into the operating position and secure with the screw.
  5. At the rear of the rack, connect the PJA E41 and PJA E42 power connectors.
  6. The management console should automatically power on and after several minutes display the login screen. Login, display, and repair any new open serviceable events that are related to the laptop.
Note: If the management console does not power on, press the power button Callout label 1. See Figure 3.
  7. To verify the black and gray private networks, refer to MAP7001 Using the network topology tool.
  8. To test the customer network connections, refer to Testing management console communications.
  9. Ensure that the customer can access the management console.
